Remarkable 2,600-Year-Old Celtic Wooden Burial Chamber Unearthed in Germany

From the ancient Celts, archaeologists in Germany have discovered an unusually intact wooden coffin at the centre of a great grave mound.

Found close to Riedlingen in southern Germany, the preserved site – dating back 2,600 years – is only the second of its kind discovered in Germany with this level of preservation. Wood that is buried underground decays within decades in most cases, making such discoveries incredibly rare. Local authorities say the extraordinary nature of the preservation has led experts to declare its site of “exceptional scientific value”.

State archaeologist of Baden-Württemberg Dirk Krausse spoke about the find at a news conference, saying: “The Riedlingen grave is an exceptional finding for archaeology.”
